Research activity is mainly related to Earthquake Engineering problems, resulting in about 300 papers on the leading international and national journals and in conference proceedings (SCOPUS: H-index 32, cits. ~3010; Google Scholar: H-index 39, cits. ~5500).
His papers mainly deal with:
- seismic vulnerability assessment of structures and infrastructure, such as masonry and Reinforced Concrete (RC) buildings and bridges;
- structural analysis, design and assessment of building structures through linear and non linear methods;
- seismic protection and rehabilitation of constructions by means of advanced materials, devices and techniques (passive control);
- experimental evaluation of mechanical properties and seismic behaviour of materials, structural elements and whole structures;
- risk assessment, damage scenarios and development of seismic risk mitigation strategies for residential and public buildings.
Expert appointed by the European Committee of the Regions in the preparation of the opinion “Resilience of critical entities” (2021).
Expert appointed by the European Commission – Joint Research Centre in the Pilot Project “REEBUILD - Integrated techniques for the seismic strengthening and energy efficiency of existing buildings” (2018 – 2021).
Expert appointed by the European Committee of the Regions in the preparation of the opinion “A European policy on the seismic requalification of buildings and infrastructure” (2017).
Delegate of the Italian Minister for Reform and Innovation in Public Administration in the National Committee for the Technical Rules on Territorial Data (2007-2010).

He had some study and collaborative research experiences with prominent research centres outside Italy (Laboratorio Nacional de Engenharia Civil, Nov. 1992; Politech Lyon, Sept. 1995; Imperial College, Oct. 1995; Geo Forschungs Zentrum (GFZ), Feb. 2007).
As regards his main scientific activities, he was:
- Scientific Responsible of an extensive Research Program named "Seismic Vulnerability of R/C buildings" funded by the Italian Seismic Agency (1999-2003);
- Scientific Responsible of the RU of the University of Basilicata within the Research Program PRIN 2002 “Design of bridges protected by strongly non linear seismic isolation system”(2003-2004);
- Scientific Responsible of the Tasks “Non Destructive Testing” and “RC Beam-Column Joints” of the 2005-2008 ReLUIS-DPC Project, Research Line 2 “Assessment and Reduction of Seismic Vulnerability of RC buildings”;
- National Coordinator of the Research Line 3.2 “Services for Emergency Management and Rapid Response” of the 2010-2013 DPC-ReLUIS Project. In the framework of the same Project, Scientific Responsible of the RU of the University of Basilicata for the Task “New aspects in the assessment of existing buildings and strengthening techniques, evaluation of the seismic risk of the built heritage at regional scale”;
- National Coordinator of the Research Lines “Divulgation and Education” and "Seismic Safety of Hospital Buildings” of the 2014-2016 ReLUIS Project funded by the Italian Department of Civil Protection (DPC). In the framework of the same Project, Scientific Responsible of the Research Unit (RU) of the University of Basilicata and of the Work Package “Methods and techniques for the seismic retrofitting of RC structures” (6 RUs involved) for the Research Line “Reinforced Concrete Structures";
- National Coordinator of the Research Line “Divulgation and Education” (6 RUs involved) of the 2017-18 ReLUIS Project funded by the Italian Department of Civil Protection (DPC). In the framework of the same Project, Scientific Responsible of the Research Unit (RU) of the University of Basilicata and of the Work Package “WP3 - Seismic Retrofitting and Upgrading of Buildings” (11 RUs involved) for the Research Line “Reinforced Concrete Structures";
